Seeing Starrs

In anticipation of the Rock-n-Romp on Saturday, Warren and I took the boys to see Garrison Starr at Spin Street yesterday after school. I used to be a big Garrison Starr fan and made a point of not only going to her shows, but attempting to draw attention myself at all of them. Too bad I can’t remember what I said at the New Daisy five years ago to make her laugh out loud. (I must have blocked it out for a reason.)

“You know, this is going to be Jiro’s dream come true,” I said to Warren on our way to pick the boys up.

“Why, have you been playing the CD in the car?” he asked, perplexed.

“I was thinking of Spin Street more than Garrison,” I said. Jiro is absolutely obsessed with CDs and DVDs. So much so that we have put our TV/DVD player in the closet and given him his own cheap CD player to destroy. Whenever I unbuckle his carseat, he makes a desperate attempt to fling himself in the front seat and scavenge through my CD holders and ram CDs one by one into the car stereo.

“Oh, you’re right,” Warren said with a worried look.

Later, when we pulled into the Spin Street parking lot, it was surprisingly empty. “Are you sure she’s playing?” Warren asked.

“Yes, I’m sure.”

As soon as we opened the door, I could hear Garrison singing. We followed the sound of her voice to the back of the store where I was excited to see my faithful commenter Steph walking around with her two week old baby! When my uterus stopped quivering, I noticed that her husband, Chip, a fellow RnR board member, was up front with their almost (?) three-year-old. We went to join them.

I had been moving at a swift pace the entire time we were there, so I don’t think Jiro even noticed we were surrounded by CDs. He and Satchel, much like Steph’s son, were busy clinging to Warren and I for dear life.

“Gosh, I hope they act just like this at the Rock-n-Romp!” we all joked.

Garrison finished up one song and said, “Does anyone have a request?”

“Can you play superhero?” I shouted out without thinking. Superhero, I think, has been her biggest hit to date, and it occurred to me that if she sang about superheroes the boys might perk up a bit.

Chip, a musician and former Garrison Starr band member, gave me the stink eye.

“Oh, I guess I should have asked her to play something from the new Cd, huh?” I said, sheepishly.

I guess I succeeded in drawing attention to myself—not that the monkeys weren’t already helping me on that front. Satchel started climbing the shelves and Jiro shrieked every time I tried to put him down. I did catch him patting my back to the beat a couple of times and when I danced him around a bit he smiled.

Garrison very graciously played Superhero at the end of her set, but the boys could have cared less. Jiro had discovered the CDs at that point and Satchel was busy fingering the Buffy action figures.

Oh well, I enjoyed the show! I’ll have to start playing her CD in the car (if Jiro will let me) so that the next time she plays we’ll be better prepared.

My little Owen alternates between DVD rings on his fingers (his record is 4 at a time)and using the CD cases as stepping-stones across the living room.
