Share-It Square

"Share-It Square is located in Portland's Sellwood neighborhood. Looking to create a community gathering place, residents turned an intersection into their own public square. They painted a geometric design based on an indigenous symbol for gathering and peace in the center of the intersection to define the space. Share-It Square also has installed on the street corners: a community bulletin board and chalkboard; a food-sharing stand; a kids' playhouse; and a 24-hour tea station – a thermos with tea cups and tea; neighbors take turns keeping it supplied with hot water and tea."
What a fun and easy way to get to create a gathering space! The people who created Share-It Square took the "ask forgiveness rather than permission" approach on this. The City was against it at first, but now they actually have a City Repair office dedicated to helping other communities do similar projects.
I would love to see something like this in my neighborhood. Any of the intersections along Williford would be nice. I also like the idea of doing something in the cove at the end of my street. Maybe that would lead to the neighborhood taking over some of the TDOT land for a community garden, soccer field, etc. I mean, why not?
I really like the idea of having something like this in Overton Park. Think how much nicer all of those roads along the outer Old Forest trails would seem with paint, benches, and free tea!

City Repair is awesome, next one is coming up in a few months, there is no reason any nabe big or small couldn't be doing.
