That's great that Satch realized he would do better to save his money. But you forgot to mention the tactic where you say "You don't get a new toy every time we go to the store." I think that's just an important a lesson for kids to learn, you know?

In this essay I was trying to focus more on our insatiable desire to always have something new and the way that manifests itself in a place like target.
Yeah, JP would love nothing more than to live in Target. But that child can find something to want in any store. It can be a cheap, stupid gumball-machine toy, but he still wants a trinket. I have just gotten in the habit of telling him before we go anywhere "I am not buying any toys. Period! Do not even ask." He still will ask, but at least he knows I'm going to say no.
I have been doing a new experiment. I go to K-Mart instead of Target so that I can get what I need (paper plates, toothpaste, shampoo) without being tempted by cute stuff. It really has worked. I've been getting out of there spending $50-$70 as opposed to my weekly $100 Target sprees.
