Double Digits

On Saturday, Satchel turned ten. Ten! My baby is TEN! Yes, I now have a decade of parenting under my belt. How crazy is that?

We did a LOT of celebrating over the weekend. I guess that's what happens when your birthday falls on a Saturday. The celebration started at school on Friday. As has become custom, I went to school to have lunch with him. Before lunch, the class circled around and one by one said what they liked about Satchel. My favorite answers included, "1. He doesn't get involved in drama. 2. He doesn't freak out when he gets bitten in the zombie game. 3. He's funny." Seriously, a LOT of his classmates think he is hilarious. After the flattery, we took turns reading from On the Day You Were Born. Then Satchel took his ten turns around the sun. I managed to not photograph any of that!

Then, in a bold move, Satchel suggested we eat dessert before lunch. No one seemed opposed to this idea, so he immediately started doling out the brownies Warren made for the class.

They are technically called "Slutty brownies" but we didn't tell the class that. It's a layer of cookie dough topped with a layer of Oreos and topped again with turtle brownie mix. Um, YUM.

On Saturday, the actual day, we had an 11:30am soccer game way out in Cordova. Satchel wanted his friend, Ian, to get a head start on the sleepover, so we loaded him in the car after the game. I told Satchel he could pick where we went to lunch and he enthusiastically said, "Taco Bell!" despite being allowed many non-fast food options. It's the Doritos Locos Tacos.

Our next stop was Game Stop. Of course. Satchel had some birthday money to spend and I promised to buy him a Turtle Beach headset.

On the way home, I insisted on a detour to Jones Orchard for some strawberry picking. The boys were not happy about this so I had to play my, "I was in labor for 36 hours" card to get them to comply.

As soon as we got home, Satchel changed clothes and made sure his new headset worked. Uh, future geek much?

At 5pm, two more friends came over and we let them take over the house for awhile. I actually went to clean my car and when I came back I found one friend walking down the street. When I asked what was up, he explained that the boys had walked to Exxon with "the girls" and he had forgotten his money so he turned back. Satchel has asked before to walk to the store with the girls and I said no, but Warren gave him the ok in my absence. I think ten is old enough to do this, especially in a pack. Anyways, I gave Will a ride to the Exxon to meet them. It gave me the opportunity to take a picture and chastise them for leaving one behind.

When I was little, my sister and I walked to the store all.the.time. Granted, we didn't have to cross Sam Cooper and East Parkway, but we often crossed Mendenhall and Knight Arnold with no stoplight. I'm glad that Satchel is getting a little taste of freedom.

A LITTLE!

Next I went to procure some chicken wings and then Warren and I loaded up the truck with Drive-In movie provisions.

The movie wasn't so great, and it was a little chilly, but I'm pretty sure everyone had fun. Once it was over, they were all hungry again and forced us to stop at Sonic on the way home.

Untitled

Once sated, they curled up with their various games until I forced them to go to sleep at 1am.

Untitled

I should interject here that Satchel was very opposed to Jiro staying for his sleepover, but I think Jiro behaved himself very well and fit right in.

They all woke up at 7am, but I refused to acknowledge them until 9:30am when I told them to get dressed for donuts. (I know, right? How much crap could I possibly feed them? I'll go grocery shopping before Jiro's sleepover this week.)

Untitled

The highlight of the donut trip was the fact that the girls down the street got their dad to bring them too, making them official "stalkers." Oh, and Theo had a really funny joke he told everyone about winning a math debate.

To offset the donuts, our next (and final) stop was the old forest.

The girls joined us for the hike.

Untitled

Some of the boys were more excited about them coming than others.

Untitled

Apparently one sign of a ten-year-old is intentionally trying to ruin photos by making goofy faces.

Will and Ian left after our hike, but I couldn't get Theo to leave. Not sure why.

Untitled

I did eventually make him go home at 3pm so I could go grocery shopping and get ready for our final family birthday dinner at Sekisui.

Untitled

Satchel had to have a house roll fix. It worked out fine, because Sekisui is close to Baskin Robbins. I ordered and paid for a birthday cake that I totally forgot to pick up on Saturday! So we all just walked over and ate it there.

And then, finally, that was it. We went home, watched The Legend of Korra, and went to bed.
