Grocery Store Pick Up

Yesterday Jiro and I went to Schnuck's while Warren and Satchel went to Home Depot. I don't normally do the shopping, but with Warren leaving me again for who knows how long and insisting that I actually cook for the children in his absence, I was forced to get some supplies.

I was a bit hungover, from the Monkey-less Convergence, and in a rush. To keep Jiro occupied, I had supplied him with a free cookie from the sample bin, two packs of crackers from the salad bar, and a yogurt tube from the box of yogurt tubes we were actually purchasing. He was making a huge mess. I was on my cellphone. You know the drill.

As we rounded the corner of the salsa aisle, a woman and her tween-aged daughter approached us. The woman, who was very put together (i.e. matching outfit, stylish glasses, thin, etc.), came up to me and said, "You look so familiar to me. Do I look familiar to you?"

I didn't quite know how to answer this one, especially in my current state. She didn't look familiar, but I felt the need to be polite about it since she had such a hopeful expression on her face. So I said, "Um, no, but you're really cute."

"Oh, thank you," she said, now a little nervous.

"I do a lot of writing," I continued in an effort to sound like someone who was not hitting on her. "Sometimes our (gesturing to Jiro) picture is the paper." I realize that having Jiro's picture in the paper would have nothing to do with me looking familiar, but hey. Maybe she's seen that tiny little headshot next to my Lamplighter column.

"Oh okay, yes, that must be it then," she said as she sprinted away from me.

Sorry for calling you on your cell phone at the grocery store.

I get approached that way by women all the time at Schnuck's.

You are such a rock star! One or two more blogs and people will be asking for your autograph.

If that's your grocery store pick-up line, it's pretty weak. You could learn a thing or two from the guys at Kroger.
