Memphis Farmer's Market

On Saturday, we woke up bright and early so we could be among the first to show our support at the new Memphis Farmer's Market downtown behind the train station.

Satchel, who had been studying animals all week, was so excited. "We're going to a farm!" he exclaimed from the backseat. "There's going to be cows and grass and a barn!"

Warren and I looked at each other.

"A farmer's market is like a store that's outside," Warren explained.

"Remember the farmer's market we went to with Aunt Shirley in Ventura?" I asked. "Where we got those yummy strawberries?"

"Oh yeah," he said, still happy, but not quite as excited.

As we drove down Main Street, I wasn't exactly sure where to go, but quickly figured it out despite the lack of signage. As I rounded the train station, I was happy to see people dressed as a banana, an apple, and a green pea directing us towards a very ample parking lot.

We piled out of the car and went in search of fresh produce and other delights. We immediately saw our good friend, mama extraordinaire, and proprietress of Groovy Foods, Uele Siebert, hawking the world's best granola.

After purchasing some "crunchy stuff" for the boys to snack on, we soldiered on. I was impressed by the number of vendors and the number of visitors, but not so much by the other offerings. I saw some pottery, other baked goods, a neighborhood booth, MFM products, and that's about it. There seemed to be only a few people actually selling produce. I saw greens, sweet potatoes, strawberries, and brocoli.

We bought a MFM t-shirt and received a free tote for being among the 1st 100 visitors. We filled our tote up with granola, baked goods, and strawberries. (We almost got some broccoli, but were beaten out by two dudes that "skipped" us in line. Warren was ready to fight them for it, but I held him at bay.) Uele mentioned that they had way more people than anyone expected, so I am hoping that future weeks will feature more things.

The boys loved the strawberries and very few were left when we got home.

The best part of the visit, for me, was seeing a mama I had never seen before who came up to me and said, "You're the one who does the dining out blog!"

I blushed and said, "That's me, and these are the monkeys."

And then she said, "Thank you so much, your blog has really been helpful to me."

And then I fell on the ground in amazement. It was nice to hear that something I do for fun and that is a bit silly, actually provides useful information to cool mamas.

Who was she? And who is that wearing her baby in an Ergo in the first picture?
I didn't make it down, but dh said he just wished he liked turnip greens. Hopefully the good crowds will draw more vendors and goods. Plus, it's early for some of the fruits and veggies to be in yet.

Yay! You're a star!

One of the few wonderful things about Dallas is that they have an enormous farmer's market. It is so cool.
