On Wednesday I purchased two Vending Machine CDs from my friend Robby. As you may recall, Vending Machine played at the last Rock-n-Romp.
When I picked the kids up from school, Jiro immediately noticed the jewel cases in the dashboard and lunged toward the front seat. I managed to keep the CDs out his grip and get him and his brother strapped into their carseats by assuring them that I was going to play the "new music."
As the first track started I said to Satchel, "This is Five's daddy."
"Five's daddy!" he said excitedly. "From the Rock-n-Romp?"
"Yep."
"Cool!" he said. "Is 'Chocolate Guitars' on there?"
I was really blown away by the fact that he not only remembered Five's daddy, but that he could remember the name of one of the songs he sang.
"It's #8," I said.
"I want to hear it NOW!" he said.
I wanted to hear the whole CD so I made him listen to the songs in order. Satchel and Jiro were both sitting with smiles on their faces. I did skip ahead a little as we approached the house so they could hear "Chocolate Guitars."
This morning when we got back in the car, the final few bars of "Chocolate Guitars" were still playing.
"Start it over!" Satchel commanded.
I did as instructed and watched as Jiro started banging his head in his seat--a sure sign of his approval. Satchel sang along happily and I thought to myself It's working!
We started Rock-n-Romp to introduce kids (and parents) to cool music in a fun, friendly environment. It is awesome to see that the kids (and parents) are really getting it.
Speaking of Rock-n-Romp, the next show is September 23rd. To get on the list, send an email to memphisrocknromp@gmail.com. We've also decided to add one more show to the line up: A Monsters Ball on October 28th. Everyone is of course encouraged to wear their costumes! Mark your calendars! Something other than Zoo Boo! Woo-hoo!
Oh and if you didn't get your Rock-n-Romp t-shirt yet, head over to Mothersville and pick one (or two or three) up!
