That's what little boys are made of.
Every morning after I drop the boys off, I peek in the window of Satchel’s class on my way out. Usually he is busy playing with his friends and doesn’t notice me, but some days he is standing there waiting for me to peek. He gives me a big smile and waves. I love having that last smile to take with me.
Today, I peeked in and saw Satchel in the corner playing with one of his bestest friends, Evan. I had to crane to see what they were playing—cars, I think. Evan flicked one of them and it accidentally hit Satchel in the eye. He started crying and it took everything in me not to turn around and run back in the classroom. Evan immediately put his arms around Satchel and hugged him tight.
My heart melted as I made eye contact with the teacher. She was reading a book to another child and didn’t notice that Satchel was crying. (He must have been whimpering.) I pointed to him and she walked over. Evan was still hugging Satchel and seemed genuinely concerned about his friend.
Once the teacher patted Satchel on the back, Evan let go, but continued to verbally soothe him. Satchel just sat there with his head down, rubbing his moist eyes with both hands. After what seemed like a million years, he finally took one of his hands and flicked a car(?) back at Evan to continue their game. He let out a big smile and they both started laughing.
I wiped my eyes too and left without ever being noticed.

I don't know how you managed to stay at the door for all of that!
Every day when I pick Connor up, he has to hug all of his friends before leaving. I just love watching them interact like that.
So sweet!
I get your zine and I just added you to my blog roll.
My Sam is 4, and I am always amazed at how sweet and lovey little boys are with each other. One time Sam played with a little boy at the park for no more than 5 minutes before we left, and as we were leaving they called out "I love you!" to each other like a scene from a Lifetime movie.
