Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat

A couple of friends alerted me to the fact that Goner Records was hosting a puppet show by Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat from New Orleans on Friday evening.

I didn't quite know what to expect, but how could I not like people who did a tour of skating rinks and have a groovy song about jam skating??? I figured it was worth checking out.

Before heading to cocktail hour, Warren, the boys, and I made our way to Goner and plopped down in front of Mr. Quintron's drum buddy and a very plush and wacky puppet theater.

A drum buddy you ask...well from what he explained to us it is an electronic instrument that incorporates a turntable, a metal can with holes punched in it, and various amounts of light coming from several tubes surrounding the turntable. Satchel was dying to touch the drum buddy, but we managed to keep him off of it. I can't say I blame him--it was pretty cool. All of the dudes in the store were oohing and aahing over it.

There were lots of kids in attendance. Miss Pussycat brought out some trunks for everyone to sit on, and the Goner guys had filled up a cooler with beer and juice boxes. It was quite cozy.

Mr. Quintron cranked up the music, the lights went down, and the show started. Incorporating Mr. Quintron's awesome tunes, black lights, handmade puppets (including a Santa with a confetti shooting machine gun), a puppet theater that doubles as a monster, and offbeat humor, it was by far the most original production I have ever seen.

A lot of the kids got a little scared and needed to cling to their parents half way through the show. (Yes, even Jiro.)

It only lasted about ten minutes, but it was a great way to kick off the weekend. My pictures really don't do it justice. Check out their website, where you can buy DVDs of the shows and other fabulous items (once Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat get back to New Orleans on April 1st).
