Spring Break (Up)

For spring break, my mom graciously invited us to go on a cruise to Mexico, Belize, and Honduras. The monkeys have been out of their minds excited about it. Yesterday, we drove to New Orleans to get on the ship.

Only they wouldn't let me on. Turns out my hospital issued birth certificate wasn't sufficient to prove my citizenship. As far as I know, it's the only birth certificate I've ever had. Unfortunately, my passport is expired. There was no talking my way on.

It was kind of a nightmare.

We were also running a little late, so we had about 20 minutes to decide what to do. It was mildly dramatic.

In the end, Warren and the boys (and my mom, sister, niece, and nephew) went without me.

It's just nuts. We couldn't find Warren's birth certificate last week, and ended up having his dad overnight one at the last minute. It never occurred to me that there might be a problem with mine.

Oh, the irony!

Warren wasn't super excited about the trip in the first place--he prefers more adventurous/less touristy vacations, but he was a total rock star yesterday. Through their tears, the monkeys decided they really wanted to go, even without me, and Warren totally took one for the team.

I'm pretty devastated. My babies are in another country! Without me! And I won't see them for a week.

I'm trying to look on the bright side. I think they're going to have a great time, and I can't wait to hear all about it.

Oh, man! That is so terrible and sad! I hope you at least get to do a few fun alone-time things (mani/pedis and lots of martinis?) to console yourself. What an awful piece of luck!

That hospital birth certificate thing happened to me when I went to get my first passport. You can order an official one from the state or county you were born in (not sure which). I hope you can enjoy your week :). And I hope Warren and the boys fare as well as we did this November when our family trip to Turkey turned into just me and the kids.
